ByteDance was founded in 2012 in Beijing, China by Zhang Yiming and Liang Rubo. It grew into one of the world's most valuable private technology companies, best known as the parent of the short-video platform TikTok (Douyin in China) and the news aggregator Toutiao. Beyond social media, ByteDance builds a range of AI-powered products: CapCut, a widely used video editing app; Coze, an AI bot and agent development platform launched in 2024; and Trae, an AI-powered code editor/IDE aimed at international developers, built by its Singapore subsidiary. Zhang Yiming stepped down as CEO in 2021 and was succeeded by co-founder Liang Rubo, who also became chairman. ByteDance remains privately held but has been valued in secondary-market transactions at several hundred billion dollars.
