Anthropic is an American AI safety-focused public-benefit corporation that develops the Claude family of large language models.

Anthropic was founded in San Francisco in 2021 by siblings Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei, both former OpenAI executives, along with several other former OpenAI researchers including Tom Brown, Jack Clark, Chris Olah, Sam McCandlish and Jared Kaplan. It was established as a public-benefit corporation with a stated mission to research and deploy frontier AI systems safely. Anthropic's flagship product is the Claude family of large language models, first released in 2023, alongside developer tools such as the Claude API and Claude Code, distributed partly through partnerships with Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud, both of which are also major investors. The company has raised large funding rounds from Google, Amazon and other investors, reaching a reported valuation of roughly $965 billion by May 2026, making it one of the most valuable privately held AI companies. In June 2026 Anthropic confidentially filed paperwork with the SEC as an early step toward a possible public listing. Anthropic positions itself as a safety-focused counterweight to faster-moving competitors like OpenAI, publishing extensive AI safety research and pursuing constitutional AI methods, while expanding its executive team, including CTO Rahul Patil and CPO Ami Vora, who joined in late 2025.
