Jared Kaplan - Anthropic co-founder, Chief Science Officer

Jared Kaplan co-founded Anthropic and is its Chief Science Officer and Responsible Scaling Officer. He is first author of the 2020 neural scaling laws paper.

Jared Kaplan is a theoretical physicist turned AI researcher who co-founded Anthropic and is its Chief Science Officer, the title Anthropic's own leadership page gives him. He holds a bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics from Stanford and a 2009 physics PhD from Harvard for a thesis titled Aspects of Holography, and has been an associate professor in Johns Hopkins University's Department of Physics and Astronomy since 2012. Kaplan moved into machine learning at OpenAI. He is the first author of the 2020 paper "Scaling Laws for Neural Language Models", which showed that language model loss falls as a power law in model size, dataset size and compute, and a co-author of the GPT-3 paper the same year. The framework became a standard planning tool for large training runs. In 2021 he left OpenAI as one of Anthropic's seven co-founders. In October 2024 Anthropic named him its Responsible Scaling Officer, the person who decides which safety standard a new model must meet before release; TIME, listing him in 2025, wrote that he judged Claude 4 to warrant heightened protections over possible biological risk. He holds a Hertz Fellowship, a Sloan Research Fellowship and an NSF CAREER award.
