Dario Amodei — co-founder and CEO of Anthropic

Dario Amodei co-founded Anthropic in 2021 and runs it as CEO. He was OpenAI's VP of research and writes essays on what AI could deliver and what it risks.

Dario Amodei was born in San Francisco in 1983. He took a BS in physics at Stanford and a PhD in biophysics at Princeton in 2011, advised by Michael Berry and William Bialek, then did a postdoc at Stanford's School of Medicine. He worked at Baidu and Google before joining OpenAI in 2016, where he was vice president of research and, as his own site puts it, led the development of GPT-2 and GPT-3 and co-invented reinforcement learning from human feedback, the technique used to align language models with human preferences. In 2021 he co-founded Anthropic with his sister Daniela and five other former OpenAI colleagues, as a public-benefit corporation combining safety research with frontier model development. He has been CEO since; the company's leadership page says he leads its research direction and strategic vision. Anthropic builds the Claude models. In May 2026 it raised a $65 billion Series H at a $965 billion post-money valuation and said its run-rate revenue had crossed $47 billion that month. He writes essays on his own site about where AI is going: "Machines of Loving Grace" in October 2024, on what the technology could deliver, and "The Adolescence of Technology" in January 2026, which sets out five kinds of risk — autonomy, misuse for destruction, misuse for seizing power, economic disruption and indirect effects — and a defence against each. He argues in public over export controls, government use of AI and safety rules; TIME's 2026 profile of him and Daniela describes a standoff with the Pentagon over limits on military use of Claude.
