On October 5, TikTok announced two ways to move shoppers from a product discovery to a purchase without sending them away to search for answers: a conversational AI Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct, a one-click checkout feature. The announcement came as part of a wider slate of advertising products unveiled at Advertising Week New York 2026. TikTok is presenting both tools as part of its effort to connect product discovery with buying inside the app.

Product questions stay inside TikTok

Shopping Assistant is designed to answer questions about product details, shipping, sizing and availability. TikTok says the agent can follow the context of a conversation and remember what a shopper needs. Its business blog describes a chat window on a product page in TikTok’s in-app browser, where the answers draw on information provided by the merchant.

The assistant is meant to help shoppers get product information without leaving that page to look elsewhere. It does not, however, make the merchant’s store disappear: TikTok’s description says shoppers can continue to checkout on the merchant’s site within the in-app browser. That distinction separates product guidance from the payment flow.

Buy Direct puts checkout in the feed

Buy Direct handles a different part of the journey. TikTok says the feature lets users purchase directly from a brand with one click, including from the For You feed. In a more detailed description, the company says checkout can use stored payment methods and saved addresses, with order tracking available in the app.

TikTok says Buy Direct requires an integration with Universal Commerce Protocol, a standardized set of rules intended to let AI agents and merchant systems work together. The company names Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe among the commerce and payment partners supporting these experiences. The announcement does not provide a general release date or say that every brand can use the tools immediately.

Testing is limited to eligible advertisers

TikTok’s business blog says Shopping Assistant, Buy Direct and its separate Lead Agent product are available through eligibility-based testing opportunities. Advertisers interested in implementing them are directed to contact their TikTok sales partner to learn about eligibility and setup. The company’s announcement does not specify how many users or brands will be included in testing.

The company framed the launch as part of a broader push to help advertisers move from audience interest to action. “AI is transforming how advertiser content is created and scaled,” says David Kaufman, TikTok’s Global Head of Monetization Product Partnerships.

TikTok links discovery to transactions

The paired tools target two common points of friction: getting answers before buying and completing payment after deciding. Shopping Assistant keeps merchant-supplied product information close to the discovery moment; Buy Direct reduces the steps between intent and payment for participating brands. TikTok’s descriptions make clear that the tools are not identical: one guides product research, while the other offers a native checkout route.

That setup extends TikTok’s commerce ambitions beyond its TikTok Shop marketplace by placing shopping functions in other app touchpoints, including the For You feed and product pages. For now, the concrete limit is access: the features are being offered through eligibility-based testing, and TikTok has not announced a broad consumer rollout.
