Salesforce was founded on March 8, 1999 in San Francisco by Marc Benioff (a former Oracle executive), Parker Harris, Dave Moellenhoff, and Frank Dominguez, pioneering the software-as-a-service model for customer relationship management. The company went public on the NYSE in 2004 under ticker CRM and grew into the world's largest CRM software provider through organic growth and acquisitions such as ExactTarget, MuleSoft, Tableau, and Slack. Salesforce introduced Einstein, its embedded AI product suite, at Dreamforce in September 2016, adding machine-learning features like Opportunity Scoring across its clouds. In March 2023 it launched Einstein GPT, described as the first generative AI for CRM, and has since evolved the offering into the Einstein 1 Platform with a conversational AI assistant (Einstein Copilot/Agentforce) that generates content and automates tasks using company data. Salesforce is headquartered in San Francisco and remains led by co-founder Marc Benioff as Chair and CEO, with tens of thousands of employees worldwide and billions of dollars in annual revenue.
