Google removes the account barrier from Vids

Google announced on September 23 that anyone with a Google Account can create AI-generated videos in Google Vids without paying for access. The feature runs on Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash and is available through vids.new on desktop, where users select “Create AI videos” from the creation menu.

“We’re bringing the magic of video creation to everyone by expanding access to Google Vids,” Justin Luk, Product Manager for Google Vids, wrote in Google’s announcement. The company positions the tool for product promotion, community events, social clips and other projects that traditionally require video-editing software or production expertise.

Gemini Omni adds controls beyond a first prompt

Google’s update focuses on direction as much as generation. Users can extend scenes while preserving visual context, lighting, character appearance and the surrounding environment. They can also set an exact clip duration so generated footage fits a planned sequence or voiceover.

Vids can generate new scenes in 1080p high definition and upscale existing AI clips for use across a timeline. Google also supplies ready-made templates aimed at product launches, local-business promotions, enterprise marketing and community announcements.

The controls give Vids a more structured workflow than a single text-to-video prompt. A user can begin with an idea, generate a scene, alter its duration, continue the sequence and prepare the result for export inside the same browser-based editor.

SynthID marks every Omni-generated clip

Google says every clip generated with Omni 1.1 in Vids includes an imperceptible SynthID watermark embedded in the video frames. The marker is designed to help viewers verify that a clip was generated with AI, adding provenance information without placing a visible label over the footage.

SynthID is part of Google DeepMind’s broader system for identifying synthetic media. In the Vids announcement, Google describes the watermark as a transparency measure for people sharing AI-generated video, rather than as a restriction on who can use the tool.

Voice generation is still listed as coming soon

Google is also preparing Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite text-to-speech for Vids. The planned feature will turn scripts into voiceovers in more than 100 languages, according to the company, but Google lists it as coming soon rather than available with the September 23 launch.

The distinction matters because the current release centers on visual generation and editing. Users can create high-definition scenes now, while automated narration will arrive separately.

Free access comes with different capacity tiers

Personal users can begin generating videos with a standard Google Account at no cost. Google says people who need more access can explore its Google AI plans, while Workspace Business and Enterprise customers receive expanded generation pools and centralized administrator controls.

The release follows a series of access expansions for Vids. Google previously opened selected Gemini features to people with Gmail accounts and later added broader AI video capabilities powered by its Veo models. The new announcement shifts the emphasis to Gemini Omni and makes the “Create AI videos” workflow available to any Google Account holder.

Google’s immediate product claim is specific: free, browser-based AI video creation with scene controls and 1080p output. Users can start at vids.new, while teams that require larger generation capacity remain directed toward paid Google AI and Workspace plans.
