Anthropic Brings Claude Into Google Docs, Sheets and Slides

Claude for Google Workspace entered public beta on October 6 across all paid Claude plans, placing Anthropic’s assistant in a sidebar inside Google Docs, Sheets and Slides. The add-on can read the open file and make edits in it; a second set of beta connectors lets users create and edit Google files from Claude itself.

Anthropic describes the launch as two ways to bring Claude into Google Workspace: start in a document, spreadsheet or presentation, or begin a task in Claude chat and work with a Google file there. “Claude for Google Workspace™ is now in public beta on all paid Claude plans,” the company says in its October 6 announcement.

Claude edits the file that is open

In the Workspace add-on, Claude appears alongside the current file and can use selected text, cells or slides as context. In Docs, it can revise text and headings directly, or present larger rewrites as suggestion cards for users to apply or dismiss. In Sheets, Anthropic says it can write formulas, build pivot tables and native charts, add tabs, and use Python to process data ranges before returning results to the sheet.

For Slides, Claude can build slides using an existing deck’s layouts and theme, then flag overlapping elements, content outside slide boundaries or text that may be hard to read. Users can choose “Ask before edits,” the default setting, which pauses for approval, or “Accept all edits,” which lets Claude apply ordinary changes without stopping for each one.

A second route starts in Claude

The separate Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors work from Claude chat. Users can paste a Google file link or ask Claude to create a document, spreadsheet or deck; on supported setups, the file opens in a pane beside the conversation. Anthropic says this route is suited to creating a new file or work that spans multiple files, and that Claude’s access follows the user’s existing Google sharing permissions.

The add-on and connectors require separate setup. Users install the add-on through the Google Workspace Marketplace and open it from the file’s Extensions menu. Workspace administrators can install it for an entire organization or selected groups. For the chat-based connectors, Team and Enterprise plan owners must enable them first.

Beta boundaries matter for administrators

The add-on works on the file currently open; it does not independently open, create or copy other files in Drive. Anthropic’s help documentation says the beta supports Chrome, Edge and Safari, but not Firefox, and a single operation can run for up to six minutes. The sidebar must also remain open while a task is running.

Google records Claude’s edits in the file’s version history under the signed-in user. The extension does not have access to Drive, Gmail or Calendar by default; users can bring in other information through enabled connectors. That separation distinguishes the new add-on from Claude’s existing Workspace connectors, which let users search and reference Google services from Claude chat rather than edit the file open in Google’s apps.

For organizations considering deployment, the key limits are practical as well as administrative: the beta cannot resolve Docs comments, edit live Connected Sheets backed by BigQuery, or create linked Sheets charts in Slides. Claude-generated charts in Slides are images and will not update automatically when their data changes.
