Google says changes to model availability in Gemini Apps for personal accounts will begin taking effect for users without an AI subscription on October 9, 2026. The company’s notice does not say that every free account will move to the new lineup on that date. After the changes take effect, the notice lists Flash-Lite as available without a plan, Flash-Lite and Flash for AI Plus, and all three models—Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro—for AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers.
October 9 is the start of a rollout
The notice says the changes will start taking effect for users without an AI subscription on October 9. That wording sets a start date for the change, not a firm deadline by which every account will have lost access to Flash or Pro. Google gives no separate date for AI Plus subscribers; it says they should receive an email explaining when the changes will take effect for them.
The model table describes availability after the changes take effect. For people using a personal account without a paid AI plan, it shows a check for Flash-Lite and no check for Flash or Pro. AI Plus is listed with Flash-Lite and Flash, but not Pro. AI Pro and AI Ultra are listed with all three models.
Google’s subscription page still lists current access
Google’s US subscription page lists the free plan at $0 per month, Google AI Plus at $4.99 per month and Google AI Pro at $19.99 per month. AI Ultra starts at $99.99 per month, with the page also listing a $199.99 option. The subscription page currently advertises access to 3.6 Flash and varying access to 3.1 Pro for free users.
That current plan description differs from the model table in the change notice, which describes the lineup after the changes take effect. The two pages address different points in the transition: the subscriptions page presents plan benefits, while the help notice sets out a future model-availability table. The October 9 date marks when the rollout begins for unsubscribed users, rather than confirming that every account will have changed by then.
Flash-Lite’s stated uses
Google DeepMind’s model card describes Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite as fast and cost-efficient, optimized for high-volume, latency-sensitive tasks such as translation and classification. It also lists support for agentic workflows. The model card describes the model itself; it does not specify how quickly individual Gemini Apps accounts will receive the account-level availability changes.
Google’s help notice also says users can select low, medium or high effort levels for each model available to them. It says higher effort can help models complete tasks and provide more thorough answers, while using more of a user’s limit. Subscribers to AI Pro or AI Ultra are also listed as having access to Deep Think, described in the notice as an option for maximum parallel reasoning.
The notice is about personal accounts
Google frames the update around Gemini Apps used with personal accounts. The notice’s schedule is specific to that setting, and its model table lays out availability by Google AI plan after the changes take effect. It does not announce a general change to access across Google’s other AI products.
For users without an AI subscription, October 9, 2026 is the announced start of the change, not a confirmed universal cutoff. Google says AI Plus subscribers will receive an email with the timing for their accounts. The published table indicates that, once the changes take effect for an account, Flash-Lite will be the model listed for users without a plan.
