Google DeepMind

Google DeepMind is Alphabet's AI research lab, formed from the 2023 merger of DeepMind and Google Brain, creator of Gemini and AlphaFold.

DeepMind was founded in London in 2010 by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg and Mustafa Suleyman as an independent AI research company. Google acquired DeepMind in 2014, and in April 2023 it was merged with Google's other AI research group, Google Brain, to form the unified Google DeepMind organization under CEO Demis Hassabis. The lab is known for landmark research including AlphaGo, the first program to defeat a world champion Go player, and AlphaFold, which solved the decades-old protein structure prediction problem; the work behind AlphaFold earned Hassabis and colleague John Jumper the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Google DeepMind now develops Google's Gemini family of multimodal foundation models, which power Google Search AI features, the Gemini app, and Google Cloud AI products, alongside continued fundamental research in reinforcement learning, robotics and scientific applications of AI. With headcount having grown to roughly 5,600 employees by 2026, Google DeepMind sits at the center of Alphabet's AI strategy, though it has seen executive turnover, including co-founder Mustafa Suleyman departing in 2024 to lead Microsoft AI.
