Up to 200 researchers, backed by $3 million

Google DeepMind and Google Cloud will offer as many as 200 European scientific researchers access to AI tools and $3 million in compute credits, the companies announced on October 14. The pledge targets researchers working on scientific problems, not general access for European users of Google’s consumer AI services. Google says the effort will support work ranging from forecasting extreme weather to mapping molecular structures.

Maureen Costello, Google Cloud’s vice president for the UK, Ireland and Sub-Saharan Africa, described the offer as a direct route to both models and computing capacity.

“Google DeepMind and Google Cloud are providing up to 200 top European scientific researchers with direct access to our frontier models, together with $3 million in compute credits.”

Five named tools span scientific fields

The announcement names AlphaFold 3, WeatherNext, AlphaGenome, AlphaEvolve and AlphaEarth Foundations as scientific tools researchers will be able to access. Google presents the package as support for research teams tackling different kinds of problems, rather than as a single model built for one discipline. The company’s examples—extreme-weather prediction and molecular-structure mapping—point to applications in both Earth science and biology.

The announcement does not say whether every selected researcher will receive access to all five tools, or how the compute credits will be divided. It also does not describe the technical route to access, any usage limits, or whether the credits can be used only with Google Cloud. Those details will determine how much of the pledge becomes usable capacity for individual research groups.

Google ties the pledge to the EU’s RAISE initiative

Google says its commitment supports the European Union’s AI for Science work by making some of its frontier models available through RAISE, the Resource for AI Science in Europe. The European Commission describes RAISE as a virtual research institute intended to pool computing power, data, talent and research funding for European researchers. Its remit includes research using AI as well as research developing AI.

The Commission says the SCIANCE Coordination and Support Action will support RAISE’s development and coordinate AI-enabled scientific research across Europe. SCIANCE’s work spans five scientific pilot areas: fundamental physics and astronomy, materials science, life science, Earth sciences, and social sciences and humanities. The Commission describes RAISE as a wider effort to connect research resources and support work across disciplines, while Google’s announcement specifies its contribution: model access and compute credits.

Access conditions remain open

Google has not named the researchers or institutions eligible for the pledge, described an application process, or given a start date or access period. The announcement also leaves unclear how the $3 million in credits will be assigned and whether researchers will receive support integrating the tools into their workflows.

For now, the concrete offer is access for up to 200 researchers, $3 million in compute credits and access to five named scientific tools. Google says some of its frontier models will be available through RAISE, but does not identify which models. Selection rules, allocation of credits and the schedule for access remain unspecified.
