“We’ve received hundreds of thousands of applications over the past few days, and we’re currently over capacity on the Claude Team and $1,000 API credit offers.”

Two benefits go on hold
Anthropic paused the free year of Claude Team and the $1,000 in Claude API credits for participants in Claude Startups on October 9. The company says it received hundreds of thousands of applications over several days, exceeding capacity for those two offers. Applicants who have already claimed the offers can keep them; Anthropic says it will re-review all applications.
The move came three days after Anthropic expanded the program. Its October 6 offer included a year of Claude Team for eligible companies new to that plan, plus a one-time $1,000 credit for building with Claude through its API. The expansion also promoted third-party startup offers and access to office hours with Anthropic’s Applied AI team.
Anthropic says its screening let too many through
In a post on October 9, Claude’s official account said Anthropic had underestimated demand and was re-reviewing applications. The company’s program page says the review may result in a change in the status of some applications, which it says it regrets.
The company’s explanation points to both volume and eligibility checks: the application surge left the offers over capacity, while the acceptance process needs adjustment. The program page tells applicants they will get an email as soon as there is a decision.
Partner offers and office hours remain
The pause does not cover every part of Claude Startups. Anthropic says accepted members retain access to the Startup Stack, which consists of offers from independent third-party companies, as well as Applied AI office hours and events. Its page advertises Startup Stack discounts and credits worth up to $45,000, a figure Anthropic attributes to partner offers rather than its own Claude Team or API benefits.
The company also says monthly API credits available to Claude Max or Team subscribers remain accessible in Console as usual. The paused startup credit is separate: Anthropic’s FAQ says it applies only to the first-party Claude API through Claude Console, not through AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or other third-party platforms.
A fast expansion, then a second review
The current program page says bootstrapped, pre-seed and venture-backed startups can apply, while companies backed by a venture firm in Anthropic’s partner network may qualify for additional API credits through that investor. In the same week, the company moved from advertising a free year of Team and API credits to reassessing who would receive them.
That reversal leaves two distinct outcomes for founders: claimed Claude offers stay in accounts, while unclaimed offers are subject to another review. Anthropic has not given a date for when it will finish that review or whether it will resume distributing the paused benefits. The Startup Stack and office hours remain available to accepted members.
