xAI

xAI is Elon Musk's AI company behind the Grok chatbot; SpaceX acquired it in February 2026 and rebranded it SpaceXAI in July 2026.

xAI was founded by Elon Musk in March 2023 in the San Francisco Bay Area, bringing together researchers from Google DeepMind, OpenAI and other labs to build large language models, with a stated mission to "understand the true nature of the universe." The company's flagship product is the Grok family of chatbots, tightly integrated with Musk's X (formerly Twitter) social platform, trained using a large GPU compute cluster known as Colossus built in Memphis, Tennessee. In March 2025 xAI merged with X Corp in an all-stock deal, and in February 2026 SpaceX acquired the combined company in a transaction valuing SpaceX near $1 trillion and xAI near $250 billion, making xAI a wholly owned SpaceX subsidiary. Nearly all of xAI's original co-founders, including Igor Babuschkin, had left the company by mid-2026. In July 2026 the company rebranded as SpaceXAI to reflect its full integration into SpaceX, with the Grok product name retained; SpaceX veteran Michael Nicolls became president in April 2026 after Gwynne Shotwell had briefly overseen operations.
