Mistral AI is a French AI company producing open-weight and proprietary large language models, positioned as Europe's leading frontier AI lab.

Mistral AI was founded in April 2023 in Paris by Arthur Mensch, a former Google DeepMind researcher, together with Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix, both former Meta AI researchers, positioning the company as Europe's answer to US-based AI labs. The company built its reputation on openly released model weights, starting with Mistral 7B and the Mixtral mixture-of-experts models, later adding proprietary flagship models and enterprise offerings delivered via its "Le Chat" assistant and API, alongside partnerships with major cloud and enterprise customers. Mistral has raised over $3 billion across multiple funding rounds, including a €2 billion round in September 2025 that included a strategic investment from Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML, which holds roughly an 11% stake, plus additional debt financing secured in March 2026. By mid-2026 Mistral AI was valued at roughly $23 billion with about 350 employees and $400 million in annual recurring revenue, remaining the most prominent European frontier AI lab.
