Guillaume Lample - Mistral AI co-founder, LLaMA author

Guillaume Lample is co-founder and Chief Science Officer of Mistral AI, first author of the XLM paper and senior author of Meta's LLaMA release.

Guillaume Lample is a French computer scientist and one of the three founders of Mistral AI, the Paris lab he started in April 2023 with Arthur Mensch and Timothée Lacroix; the three had met as students at École Polytechnique. He took a Master of Language Technologies at Carnegie Mellon in 2017, advised by Alexander Waibel and Christopher Dyer, and a PhD at Sorbonne Université, defending a thesis on unsupervised machine translation on 17 October 2019 under Ludovic Denoyer while working at Facebook AI Research. At FAIR he wrote, with Alexis Conneau, "Cross-lingual Language Model Pretraining" - the XLM paper, which set out how to pretrain one model across many languages - and he is the senior author of LLaMA, the February 2023 paper and weight release that opened the open-weight era. Mistral's own site gives his title as co-founder and Chief Science Officer. He directs the research behind the company's open-weight and commercial models and its assistant, now called Mistral Vibe. Mistral raised €1.7 billion in September 2025 at an €11.7 billion valuation, led by ASML, and €3 billion in September 2026 at more than €21 billion, led by Samsung Electronics.
