Reddit Sets March 2027 End for Remaining Public API Access

Reddit says it will end public API access for remaining apps and users by March 2027; community members say the migration could leave some long-running moderation tools without maintainers. The company’s September 30 update sets out the first enforcement dates and financial support for moving bots and apps onto Reddit’s Developer Platform, Devvit.

The timetable puts the first cutoff on October 31, when Reddit will stop accepting new public API access requests. From January 12, 2027, it will begin removing access for apps and users that have not registered or responded to Reddit’s outreach. Public access for everyone still using the old route is scheduled to close in March.

Reddit’s cutoff meets a maintenance problem

In comments beneath the announcement, Reddit user shiruken said they had been contacted about moving bots and scripts used by r/science, but lacked the time to take on the work. “So everything will just break come March,” the user wrote. The comment is one maintainer’s account, not an estimate of how many communities face the same problem, but it illustrates the practical risk in Reddit’s schedule: migration depends on someone being able and willing to rebuild each tool.

Reddit says more than 14,000 apps and bots have registered. It names DeltaBot, MagicEyeBot and RemindMeBot as examples of apps whose migrations are complete or nearly complete, while acknowledging that some gaps remain. The company says moderators can report tools whose owners are unknown; it has received more than 100 submissions through that process.

Scraping is Reddit’s stated reason for the shift

Reddit framed the API changes in August as a response to automated abuse and commercial scraping. In its earlier announcement, the company said the public API “wasn’t built for today’s scale, automated abuse, or commercial scraping,” and argued that a controlled platform would let it enforce policies more consistently. The new schedule turns that broad plan into a migration deadline for third-party apps, rather than a sudden shutdown on announcement day.

Reddit says the Developer Platform should give trusted automation a supported home while limiting misuse of Reddit data. That rationale comes as platforms face pressure over automated collection of public web content, including material that may be used in AI products. The company’s API post does not say that all third-party developers are scraping data for AI training; it presents scraping and resale as risks the API restrictions are intended to curb.

The migration offer has conditions

Reddit’s $1 million App Migration Program offers $1,000 payments to eligible apps that migrate successfully, along with possible access to Reddit Developer Funds, free hosting, technical guidance and direct support. Developers must apply through the registration process by November 30, 2026, to be considered for the migration bounty. Reddit also says it will provide additional support for apps it considers important to moderation and community operations.

The incentives do not erase the engineering work. Reddit’s August update said Python support was not on its roadmap, while pointing developers using PRAW, a Python Reddit API wrapper, to migration resources and expert help. A guide can assist with rewriting code, but it does not guarantee that every external workflow or community-specific bot can be reproduced on Devvit.

New applications close before the main cutoff

Reddit’s next immediate deadline is October 31, when it stops taking new API access requests. The company plans a migration progress update on November 10, and the bounty application deadline follows on November 30. API access removal begins January 12, 2027, for apps and users that have not registered or engaged with Reddit; the remaining public access ends in March.

For developers, registration is now the first step even if a port is not ready: Reddit says the form can also flag missing features and migration blockers. The company says it will continue working with developers and moderators, but the published schedule gives the remaining public API users a fixed endpoint: March 2027.

“We know migrating takes time and effort, and we’re providing funding, technical guidance, and direct outreach and support to help.”
