Reddit was founded in 2005 by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian, who were college roommates at the University of Virginia. The service began as a user-powered forum for finding news and interesting content, later expanding into a network of topic-based communities. Reddit builds and operates a social platform organized around communities, user posts, comments, voting, moderation tools, advertising products, and developer services. Its public website and applications are supported by a global technology and operations organization. Reddit was acquired by Advance Publications in 2006 and became an independent company again in 2015, when Steve Huffman returned as CEO. The company completed its initial public offering in March 2024 and its Class A common stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker RDDT. Today, Reddit is a public consumer internet company with more than 2,500 employees. Its technology leadership identifies artificial intelligence and machine learning as areas supporting product innovation, but Reddit’s core business remains its community-based discussion platform and related advertising products.
