Google is gradually rolling out an early preview that lets Gemini handle routine business calls on Pixel 11 phones in the United States. The experiment is for Gemini paid subscribers enrolled in the Phone by Google Public Beta, and the rollout began September 24, 2026. Google says it is starting small while it works to get the experience right.
Gemini makes the call, users stay in control
Users can ask Gemini to call a business to check whether a product is in stock, reserve a restaurant table or move an appointment. Gemini calls through the Gemini app on the user’s Pixel, introduces itself, navigates automated phone menus, waits on hold and speaks with the person who answers. Users can follow a live transcript or listen to the call, and can take over at any point.
“Asking AI to speak on your behalf is a big step that requires genuine trust. That’s why we built this experience around user control,” wrote Siri Tejaswini Jogi, Community Manager, in the Google Pixel Community announcement.
Google says these calls represent real customers making real requests, such as booking appointments, placing items on hold or rescheduling reservations. The company also says the feature needs to respect the time of neighborhood shops and front-desk staff answering calls.
Requirements and call disclosures
The preview is limited to people in the US who are at least 18 and have a Pixel 11 with a US SIM card. Users also need a Google AI subscription, the public beta version of the Phone by Google app, the latest Gemini mobile app, and their device language set to English. Google says availability is gradual, so meeting the requirements does not guarantee immediate access.
Gemini uses the user’s phone number and mobile network to place calls, and standard carrier rates apply. Before a call starts, users can review the number Gemini will call and details it plans to share, including their name and contact information. Gemini begins each call by identifying itself as a Google AI assistant, saying the call is recorded and stating the user’s name. For now, it can call only US phone numbers.
Monitoring, recordings and restrictions
Users can cancel before a call connects, monitor it through a live transcript or audio, and take over by tapping the control in the app. The microphone is muted by default. When a user takes over, Gemini announces the handoff and leaves the call. Afterward, the user receives a notification and can review a summary in Gemini, as well as read the full transcript and listen to the recording in the Phone app.
Google says Gemini cannot make emergency calls, complete financial transactions, share sensitive financial information or relay sensitive personal details such as passwords, health information or Social Security numbers. The feature also cannot be used for telemarketing or to sell products or services. Google’s help page says users can opt out of receiving automated calls from other Gemini users. It also notes that daily call limits apply; users who reach the limit must wait until the next day to make more calls.
