Googlebook moves from preview to preorder
Google opened preorders for Googlebook on September 21, introducing a new laptop category built on the Android technology stack and paired with desktop foundations from ChromeOS. The first machines come from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo, with prices starting at $899.
Google says U.S. customers will find the laptops in stores beginning October 4. Devices arrive on October 5 in Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia. Preorders are available through the Google Store, Best Buy and selected retailers.

Gemini gets a cursor, a voice key and custom widgets
Googlebook’s main software pitch is a set of Gemini functions embedded in ordinary desktop actions. Magic Pointer appears when users wiggle the cursor, bringing Gemini to whatever is on screen. Google says the feature can organize a calendar or translate selected text without forcing users to move between several windows. Gemini acts only after a user asks it to, and the feature can be switched off.
Rambler sits beside the Quick Insert key and turns spoken notes into structured writing. Google says it can organize action items, rough thoughts and dictated material into headings, checklists and formatted summaries, including speech delivered in multiple languages.
Create My Widget lets users describe a desktop tool in plain language. Gemini then generates a custom widget intended to share relevant updates throughout the day.
Five manufacturers supply the first Googlebooks
The initial hardware range includes aluminum, magnesium alloy and carbon fiber designs, with touchscreens reaching up to 2.8K OLED resolution. Google says the laptops include haptic glass trackpads, backlit keyboards and processors from Intel and Qualcomm. Dedicated neural processing units exceed 45 trillion operations per second, according to the company, while claimed battery life reaches 14 hours.
A glowing exterior strip called Glowbar provides a visual status indicator. It lights at startup, displays the battery charge level and responds with animations when users speak to Gemini. The feature gives Googlebook hardware a visible identity across machines made by different companies.
Android phone features sit beside desktop Chrome
Googlebook is designed for people who already use Android phones. During setup, the laptop can bring over phone settings, saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks and messages with end-to-end encryption. Continue On lets users resume supported tasks from a phone on the laptop, while the Files app can view, search and open phone files and photos without a separate transfer step.
Cast My Apps streams phone applications into a desktop window. Google gives food delivery and Messages as examples, allowing users to interact with an app from the laptop even when a native desktop version is unavailable. The system also supports millions of Android applications through Google Play, alongside the desktop Chrome browser and its extensions.
Google lists Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and CapCut among the native creative tools available on the platform. The company also includes a year of GeForce NOW with each purchase for cloud gaming, although that offer is separate from Googlebook’s local processing capabilities.
Google adds developer tools and long-term support
Googlebook includes Antigravity, the company’s AI agent development platform, along with a full terminal environment for tools such as Claude Code and Antigravity CLI. An isolated Linux environment runs through a Level 5 security-certified pKVM hypervisor, giving developers access to Linux tools and code repositories within a separate environment.
Google says the platform uses the security architecture associated with ChromeOS, including a Google Titan hardware root of trust, layered defenses and on-device malware detection. Googlebook OS will receive feature drops and updates for up to 10 years.
Every Googlebook includes 12 months of Google AI Pro, with 5TB of cloud storage and access to Gemini Advanced tools. The package also includes three months of YouTube Premium and Adobe Photoshop. At $899, Google’s first Googlebooks put the price well above many traditional Chromebooks; the company is asking Android users to pay for the combination of local laptop hardware, Gemini functions and direct phone access.
