Aleph Alpha's research organization in Heidelberg is hiring a senior researcher to study pre-training data — which corpora let foundation models perform best on targeted capabilities. Work includes ablation studies across scales, data composition and training dynamics, quality measurement, synthetic data, curriculum learning and curation methods such as influence functions and gradient-based matching. The researcher also helps engineers build scalable data pipelines and coordinates with post-training teams. Requirements: machine-learning theory, scaling laws, experiment design, Python and PyTorch; a PhD is preferred. Hybrid; relocation to Heidelberg or fortnightly travel.
