Auphonic was founded in 2013 in Graz, Austria, by audio engineer Georg Holzmann, who built the service after fielding the same question over and over from podcasters: how do I make my recording sound professional without learning to mix? The company grew out of research into automatic loudness correction and noise handling, and it has stayed a small, self-funded team ever since rather than chasing outside investment. The core product runs uploaded audio through a chain of algorithms - adaptive leveling, noise and hum reduction, filtering, and loudness normalization to broadcast standards - and hands back a cleaned file with almost no manual adjustment required. It also produces chapter markers, ID3/metadata tags, and can publish straight to podcast hosts, Dropbox, or via API and Zapier for teams that want it wired into a larger pipeline. Auphonic says its algorithms have processed audio for more than two million registered users, spanning solo podcasters, public broadcasters, audiobook narrators, and university media departments. It remains a niche, engineering-first company rather than a broad content platform, and that focus is a large part of why it has kept a loyal following in podcasting circles for over a decade.
