Christopher Re: Stanford professor and founder

Christopher Re is a Stanford computer science professor who leads Hazy Research and co-founded SambaNova and Together AI. He won a MacArthur Fellowship in 2015.

Christopher Ré is a professor in Stanford's Department of Computer Science, working in the Stanford AI Lab, the Center for Research on Foundation Models and the Machine Learning Group, and he leads the Hazy Research group. He took a BS at Cornell University in 2001 and a PhD at the University of Washington in Seattle in 2009, and was an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison before joining the Stanford faculty in 2013. His research joins database systems to machine learning. The DeepDive engine extracted structured facts from unstructured text for drug-development datasets and for law enforcement agencies and NGOs fighting human trafficking; the company he built on that work, Lattice Data, was acquired by Apple in 2017. His lab now works on the foundations of foundation models, including the ThunderKittens and HipKittens GPU kernels and the Evo DNA models, whose Evo 2 paper appeared in Nature in March 2026. SambaNova Systems, the AI chip company he co-founded in 2017 with Kunle Olukotun and Rodrigo Liang, closed the first $1 billion of a Series F at an $11 billion valuation in July 2026. He is also a founder of Together AI, started in 2022 with Vipul Ved Prakash, Ce Zhang, Tri Dao and Percy Liang, and GV lists him as an advisor. He was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 2015.
