Zapier was founded in 2011 in Columbia, Missouri by Wade Foster (CEO), Bryan Helmig (CTO), and Mike Knoop (Chief Product Officer), alumni of the University of Missouri. The founders joined Y Combinator's Summer 2012 batch after an initial rejection, and the company has operated as a fully remote workforce since its founding. Zapier's core product lets users connect thousands of web applications and automate workflows ('Zaps') without writing code. The company has since added AI-powered capabilities, including Zapier AI/Zapier Agents, that let users build and orchestrate automated, AI-driven workflows across connected apps. Zapier raised only about $1.3 million in seed funding from Y Combinator and Bessemer Venture Partners and has grown primarily through revenue since, without large venture rounds. In January 2021, Sequoia Capital and Steadfast Financial purchased shares from early investors and employees in a secondary transaction that valued the company at about $5 billion.
