Unbabel
AI-and-human translation platform for customer support and content, now operating as part of TransPerfect after its 2025 acquisition.
Unbabel was founded in Lisbon in 2013 by Vasco Pedro, João Graça, and co-founders, and built its reputation on a human-in-the-loop model that paired machine translation with a global network of freelance editors to translate customer support tickets, chat, and email for companies including Uber, Booking.com, and Microsoft. In November 2024, Unbabel launched Widn.AI, a standalone product built on its in-house Tower large language model, aimed at LLM-only translation for use cases that previously required the human-editing layer, while keeping Unbabel's COMETKiwi quality-estimation scoring underneath to flag weak output. TransPerfect acquired Unbabel in August 2025, and the majority of the team, including several founders, joined TransPerfect; Unbabel's core Language Operations platform and Widn.AI continue to operate as part of TransPerfect's language-AI division.
