Trunk Tools was founded in 2021 by Sarah Buchner, who grew up working construction as a teenager in her family's firm in Austria before earning a PhD in data science and civil engineering and an MBA from Stanford. The company's premise is that construction generates enormous volumes of documents, drawings, specs, RFIs, submittals, meeting minutes, but almost none of it is searchable or connected, so field teams waste hours a day hunting for answers that already exist somewhere in the project files. Trunk Tools' AI platform, branded Cortex, ingests a project's documents and powers a set of purpose-built tools: TrunkText answers natural-language questions over text message, desktop, or Microsoft Teams with citations back to the source document, while TrunkSubmittal automatically checks submittals against specifications to catch discrepancies before they cause delays. The company says its software has been deployed across hundreds of projects and to more than 140,000 users. Based in New York, Trunk Tools closed a $40 million Series B in 2025 led by Insight Partners, with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Liberty Mutual Strategic Ventures among others, bringing its total funding to $70 million.
