Tana was founded in 2021 by Tarjei Vassbotn, Olav Kriken, and Grim Iversen, three Norwegian co-founders who set the company's development base in Norway while headquartering the business in Palo Alto, California. The company spent a long stealth period building a waitlist that reportedly passed 160,000 people, with strong representation from large enterprises, before launching more broadly. Tana raised a $14 million Series A in February 2025 led by Tola Capital at a $100 million post-money valuation, bringing total funding to $25 million alongside its earlier seed round backed by Lightspeed Venture Partners, Northzone, and a group of individual investors that included Google Maps co-founder Lars Rasmussen and Dropbox co-founder Arash Ferdowsi. The product's core mechanic, "supertags," lets users turn any piece of unstructured text into a structured object with its own fields, so a note can behave like a database row without a person having to build a database first. Tana has since added AI features including live meeting transcription without a bot joining the call, automated summaries and action items, and multi-model chat, positioning itself as a knowledge tool for teams rather than a purely personal notes app.
