AI-native UI design tool where every layer you drag maps to real React and Tailwind code, built by ex-Vercel and ex-Stripe design engineers.

Subframe was started in 2022 by Filip Skrzesinski and Irvin Zhan, both design engineers who had previously worked at Vercel and Stripe. The company went through Y Combinator and is based in San Francisco with a small team of under ten people. Subframe's pitch is that a Figma-style canvas shouldn't produce throwaway pictures of a UI — every shape, component, and layout rule in its editor corresponds to a real React component with Tailwind CSS underneath, so what a designer builds is what an engineer pulls into the codebase via the Subframe CLI. The AI layer sits on top of that structure: teams can teach it their component library and product style so generated pages, themes, and inline edits match what already exists rather than generic defaults. The product connects to coding tools like Cursor and Claude Code over MCP, letting engineers pull components and prompt new designs from inside their IDE with the surrounding codebase as context.
