Stability AI was founded in 2019 by Emad Mostaque and Cyrus Hodes, and is headquartered in London, United Kingdom. The company rose to prominence in 2022 with the public release of Stable Diffusion, an open-source text-to-image diffusion model that became one of the most widely adopted generative AI systems. Stability AI's product portfolio expanded to include Stable Video Diffusion, Stable Audio, Stable LM, and Stable 3D, alongside enterprise licensing and API services built on its open models. The company has positioned itself as a champion of open-weight generative AI research alongside commercial offerings. The company raised roughly $101 million in an October 2022 round led by Coatue Management and Lightspeed Venture Partners at a reported $1 billion valuation, and received further investment in mid-2024 from Coatue, Lightspeed, Greycroft, Sound Ventures, and O'Shaughnessy Ventures. Founder Emad Mostaque stepped down as CEO in March 2024; Prem Akkaraju, former CEO of Weta Digital, was named CEO in June 2024, with Sean Parker joining as Executive Chairman. As of 2026, Stability AI continues to operate as an independent company developing open and commercial generative media models, with filmmaker James Cameron serving on its board of directors since September 2024.
