Speechmatics was founded in Cambridge in 2006 by Dr. Tony Robinson, a speech researcher who had worked on applying neural networks to speech recognition since the 1980s. The company is headquartered in Cambridge with additional offices in London, Boston, Chennai and Brno, and has raised roughly $90.6 million across five funding rounds, including a $62 million Series B in 2022 led by Susquehanna Growth Equity with Amadeus Capital and Albion Capital Group also participating. Katy Wigdahl serves as CEO, with Robinson remaining involved as founder. Its core product is an automatic speech recognition engine, now in its Ursa 2 generation, positioned on accuracy and language coverage — more than 50 languages and dialects, sub-one-second real-time latency, and notably better handling of code-switching between languages mid-sentence than most competitors. On top of the ASR engine, Speechmatics offers Flow, a voice-agent API that layers speech recognition, an LLM and text-to-speech together so developers can build phone- and voice-based assistants without stitching three separate vendors together. Customers use the underlying technology for live captioning, contact-center analytics and clinical dictation, competing most directly with Deepgram, AssemblyAI and the speech APIs built into Google Cloud and Azure.
