German enterprise software giant behind SAP S/4HANA, whose Joule AI assistant now spans finance, HR, procurement, and supply chain across the SAP ecosystem.

SAP was founded in 1972 in Weinheim, Germany, by five former IBM engineers who wanted to build standard business software that could run in real time across a whole company. Headquartered in Walldorf since its early years, SAP grew into the dominant ERP vendor for large enterprises, with S/4HANA now the flagship product line running finance, supply chain, and manufacturing processes for a large share of the world's biggest industrial and consumer companies. Christian Klein has served as sole CEO since 2020. Beginning in 2023, SAP consolidated its various copilot experiments under the Joule brand, expanding it from a chat assistant embedded in S/4HANA and SuccessFactors into a broader agent platform. By early 2026 SAP describes Joule as covering dozens of pre-built agents across finance, HR, and procurement, with a low-code studio for customers to assemble their own, and a bidirectional integration with Microsoft 365 Copilot that lets Microsoft-centric employees reach into SAP data without leaving Teams.
