Opentensor Foundation
Nonprofit foundation behind Bittensor, a blockchain network that pays independent AI subnets in TAO for useful compute, inference, and training work.

Opentensor Foundation is the nonprofit steward of Bittensor, a proof-of-stake blockchain launched in 2021 that turns machine learning work into an on-chain incentive market. Instead of one company owning a model, Bittensor splits into dozens of independent "subnets," each a competition where miners run models or provide compute and validators score their output, and the chain mints TAO to the best performers roughly every block. The subnet model has produced a real, if uneven, ecosystem: teams building serverless inference, data scraping, storage, and prediction markets all plug into the same token and validator set rather than raising separate venture rounds. Subnet token market caps have at times summed to several billion dollars, and some subnets, like the inference network Chutes, process meaningful production traffic at prices well under major cloud providers. That growth has come with friction. In 2025 a prominent subnet team publicly accused the foundation's leadership of using centralized control over emissions to punish builders who pushed back, and independent estimates suggest real customer revenue across all subnets is a small fraction of the roughly $300 million a year in TAO the network mints to reward them, a gap critics say looks more like token subsidy than proven demand.
