MyHeritage was founded in 2003 by Gilad Japhet, who remains the company's CEO, and is headquartered in Or Yehuda, Israel. The company built its business around online genealogy, family tree building, and DNA testing, and by its own figures serves more than 104 million registered users with a database of roughly 21 billion historical records. Francisco Partners acquired MyHeritage in 2021 in a deal reported at around $600 million. Starting in 2020, MyHeritage extended its product line into AI-driven photo tools, launching MyHeritage In Color for photo colorization and Photo Enhancer for sharpening and restoring old scans. In February 2021, the company released Deep Nostalgia, which animates faces in still photographs using technology licensed from D-ID; the feature went viral and MyHeritage reported close to 100 million animations created by users. The photo tools are sold as part of MyHeritage's paid genealogy subscription tiers rather than as standalone products, with a limited free tier that applies a watermark and caps usage.
