Meta AI is Meta Platforms' AI division, reorganized in 2025 into Meta Superintelligence Labs, developer of the Llama and Muse model families.

Meta's AI research effort began in December 2013 when Mark Zuckerberg and then-CTO Mike Schroepfer launched Facebook AI Research (FAIR), recruiting NYU professor Yann LeCun as founding director; the group later became publicly known as Meta AI after the company's 2021 rebrand. Meta AI is best known for the open-weight Llama family of large language models, widely adopted across the AI industry, as well as the consumer-facing Meta AI assistant embedded across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. In mid-2025 Meta underwent a major reorganization, creating Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) under new Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, with Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross joining senior leadership; the restructuring absorbed FAIR alongside new "TBD Lab" and infrastructure groups. Longtime chief scientist Yann LeCun departed in November 2025 to found his own AI venture. In April 2026 Meta Superintelligence Labs released Muse Spark, the first model from its new Muse family, now powering the Meta AI assistant, as Meta continues investing heavily in AI compute and talent to compete with OpenAI, Google and Anthropic.
