Builds Pi, a free conversational AI designed for supportive, everyday chat rather than coding or document work.

Inflection AI was founded in 2022 by Mustafa Suleyman, Karén Simonyan, and Reid Hoffman with the goal of building a 'personal AI' focused on emotional intelligence rather than raw task performance. Its flagship product, Pi (short for 'personal intelligence'), launched in 2023 as a chatbot built to hold supportive, conversational dialogue and quickly attracted a large user base, positioning itself against more utilitarian assistants like ChatGPT. In March 2024, Microsoft hired most of Inflection's research staff, including Suleyman and Simonyan, to lead its new Microsoft AI division, in a deal that also licensed Inflection's technology. The remaining company was reorganized under new CEO Sean White, formerly head of R&D at Mozilla, and has since repositioned itself as an enterprise-focused AI studio building custom models for regulated industries while continuing to operate Pi for consumers.
