Honeycomb was founded in San Francisco in 2016 by Christine Yen and Charity Majors, who had previously built and operated large-scale systems at Parse and Facebook and grew frustrated with monitoring tools built around pre-aggregated metrics and dashboards that couldn't answer questions nobody had thought to graph in advance. The company is widely credited with popularizing the modern definition of observability as distinct from traditional application performance monitoring, built on wide, structured events rather than separate metrics, logs, and traces. Honeycomb raised a $50 million Series D in 2023, bringing total funding to roughly $150 million, with Scale Venture Partners, Insight Partners, and Headline among its backers. Christine Yen serves as CEO, with Charity Majors as CTO. In 2023 Honeycomb shipped Query Assistant, a natural-language interface built on GPT-3.5 and text embeddings, without sending customer telemetry to OpenAI for model training, that turns a plain-English question into a working query, and it has since added Pipeline Intelligence to auto-configure telemetry pipelines and an MCP server so AI coding agents can pull production context directly into their workflow.
