AI video interviewing and skills assessment platform that helps large employers screen high-volume applicant pools.

HireVue is one of the earliest companies to bring AI into hiring, founded in 2004 by Mark Newman as an on-demand video interviewing platform. It's headquartered in South Jordan, Utah, and has been majority-owned by private equity firm The Carlyle Group since 2019; Jeremy Friedman, formerly CEO of the education technology company Schoology, took over as HireVue's CEO in January 2024. The platform combines recorded and live video interviewing with game-based and skills assessments, letting large employers move thousands of applicants through a first-round screen without a recruiter watching every video. HireVue expanded its assessment business by acquiring competitor Modern Hire in 2023, folding its validated pre-hire assessments into the broader platform. The company drew significant public criticism for AI-based facial and voice analysis it used to score candidates, discontinuing the practice in January 2021 after its own research found visual data contributed minimal predictive value and after bias concerns from researchers and advocacy groups. The ACLU filed a discrimination complaint in 2025 related to HireVue's platform, and the company has continued shifting toward structured, competency-based assessments rather than facial scoring.
