Cognition AI builds Devin, an autonomous AI software engineering agent that plans, writes, tests, and ships code with minimal human input.

Cognition AI, Inc. was founded in August 2023 by Scott Wu (CEO), Steven Hao, and Walden Yan, all former competitive programmers, and is headquartered in San Francisco, California. In March 2024 the company launched Devin, marketed as the first AI software engineer capable of end-to-end coding tasks and benchmarked on SWE-bench. Cognition raised $175 million in April 2024 led by Founders Fund at a $2 billion valuation, reached a $4 billion valuation in a round led by 8VC in March 2025, and closed a $400 million Series C in September 2025 led by Founders Fund at a $10.2 billion valuation, as Devin's annualized revenue grew from about $1 million to $73 million within a year. In July 2025, Cognition acquired Windsurf (the AI coding IDE formerly known as Codeium) shortly after Google acquihired Windsurf's CEO and senior team in a separate $2.4 billion licensing deal; the acquisition was followed by layoffs of roughly 30 staff as the combined company restructured.
