Maker of OpenHands, an open-source AI agent platform that reads a GitHub issue, writes the code, and opens a pull request without a human driving each step.

All Hands AI was founded in 2024 by Robert Brennan, Graham Neubig and Xingyao Wang, who had been core maintainers of an open-source project then called OpenDevin, an attempt to build a fully open alternative to closed autonomous coding agents. Neubig is a Carnegie Mellon professor working on language agents and Wang was a PhD researcher on the same team; Brennan brought prior startup and engineering leadership experience. The trio renamed the project OpenHands and spun out a company to support and commercialize it while keeping the core agent open source. The company raised a $5 million seed round in September 2024 led by Menlo Ventures, with participation from Pillar VC, Betaworks, Rebellion, and angels including Hugging Face co-founder Thom Wolf and PyTorch creator Soumith Chintala. In November 2025 it raised an $18.8 million Series A led by Madrona to build out OpenHands Cloud, a hosted version aimed at enterprise teams that don't want to run the agent themselves. All Hands AI is based in the Boston area and remains small relative to its GitHub footprint — the OpenHands repository has drawn tens of thousands of stars and a large outside contributor base, which the company treats as central to its strategy of competing with closed-source coding agents on trust and auditability rather than marketing spend.
