Aider is an open-source command-line tool for AI-assisted pair programming, started by Paul Gauthier in 2023. Gauthier previously co-founded Inktomi, one of the original internet search engine companies. Aider runs in the terminal and lets developers collaborate with large language models to edit multi-file codebases, using git as a safety net with automatic commits for AI-made changes. It is model-agnostic, supporting OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, DeepSeek, and local models via Ollama or LM Studio. The project is released under the Apache 2.0 license and is maintained on GitHub under the Aider-AI organization, with hundreds of community contributors and tens of thousands of GitHub stars. It is an open-source project, not a venture-backed company.
