More than 30,000 Uber employees are getting access to ChatGPT Work, an OpenAI agent for workplace tasks, as the company expands a pilot that began with 1,000 staff. Announced October 22, the rollout makes the tool available across Uber’s global workforce. ChatGPT Work operates within ChatGPT Enterprise and is designed to handle complex, multi-step tasks and produce finished work.
From a 1,000-person pilot to company-wide access
Uber is describing the expansion as its first company-wide deployment of an agentic platform tailored for knowledge work. ChatGPT Work connects with workplace services including Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar and Slack. OpenAI says employees can use it to research information, prepare meeting briefs, create presentations, analyze data and complete workflows across those applications.
The pilot began earlier this year and included employees in departments such as finance, operations and product. About 80% of those early users were non-engineers, Uber vice president of engineering Sumanth Sukumar told TechCrunch. Their reported tasks included analyzing operational data for trends and recommendations, localizing training materials for different markets and languages, and building personalized interactive dashboards for daily work.
Sukumar said Uber is giving teams room to try the tools and determine how they fit their work. Earlier this year, the company paired 30 AI engineers with teams across Uber for two weeks to automate parts of their jobs. Sukumar told TechCrunch that the effort, which Uber called “AI pods,” showed the opportunity in combining technical expertise with knowledge of a particular job.
“Uber has always been a company of builders, and every day, millions of people around the world rely on what we create. As AI transforms how we work, we want to give everyone the tools to innovate, solve problems and help shape Uber’s future. Rolling out ChatGPT Work across the company is an exciting step toward that ambition, and I can’t wait to see what our teams build with it.”

Models, integrations and employee training
OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol will be the default capability for Uber in ChatGPT Work, alongside access to OpenAI’s other models and multimodal tools, including voice and image generation. The rollout will be supported by Uber’s internal AI skills library, approved integrations and employee training. OpenAI says teams in operations, finance, marketing and product will be among those supported.
The deployment is separate from Codex, which Uber’s developers and software engineering teams will continue using for software development and coding workflows. ChatGPT Work is intended for knowledge work across the company, while Codex remains the tool identified for engineering work.
Uber plans to evaluate usage and outcomes
OpenAI says the companies plan to share information about adoption, use cases and measurable outcomes as the rollout progresses. Uber has not published company-wide productivity results from ChatGPT Work. TechCrunch reported that Uber did not disclose the cost of the expanded deployment. Sukumar told the publication that Uber will track how employees use the tool, the workflows they develop and whether it helps them work more effectively, then use its evaluation to guide AI deployment across the business.
The announcement sets out the scale of the rollout and the intended support, but does not provide results from company-wide use. Publicly reported evidence so far includes the 1,000-person pilot, examples of tasks employees tried and access extending to more than 30,000 people. The cost and measured outcomes have not been disclosed.
