Three days of drafting, reduced to under 30 minutes

TD Bank U.S. says its new Credit Assist system can prepare a first draft of a commercial credit analysis in less than 30 minutes, down from as many as three working days. The tool coordinates specialized AI agents to process deal documents and produce cited drafts of six key credit-memo sections. The bank announced the capability on October 22 at the 2026 Evident AI Symposium in New York.

The time claim covers preparation of a first draft, not the full underwriting process or a final lending decision. TD says credit professionals remain responsible for reviewing the analysis, making lending recommendations and reaching final decisions. That distinction matters: the system is intended to reduce document-handling and drafting work, while leaving the judgment on a loan with bank staff.

Agents work across large document packages

A single commercial credit review can involve 20 to 30 deal documents drawn from more than 50 document types, according to TD. Credit Assist uses an orchestration layer to coordinate agents that process, extract, analyze and organize information, then draft multiple memo sections in parallel. TD says each section goes through its own analysis, review and refinement process.

The resulting narrative includes citations, which credit professionals can question, verify and refine. TD says more than 300 credit professionals prepare over 10,000 credit memos each year, giving the tool a sizeable potential audience within its commercial credit operation. The announcement does not specify how many staff members currently use Credit Assist or how broadly it has been deployed.

TD reports a 95% expert-review pass rate

TD says it tested the system on 220 curated deals, with input from more than 70 domain experts. Credit professionals evaluated the generated analyses against TD standards and helped refine the system; 95% of evaluated outputs passed subject-matter expert review across the segments assessed. The announcement does not describe an independent evaluation or provide a comparison with unaided human drafting.

Jill Gateman, Head of Commercial Banking at TD Bank U.S., said: “By reducing time spent on manual preparation, our credit professionals can focus more of their time on understanding the client, assessing risk and moving opportunities forward, while maintaining the rigor and accountability that are fundamental to good lending decisions.”

The final credit decision stays with people

TD’s Analytics, Intelligence & AI team led development and delivery, working with commercial credit specialists and teams focused on technology, risk, architecture, governance and controls. Layer 6, the bank’s AI research and development center, developed the underlying AI capabilities. TD describes the system as a combination of that research and the expertise of its commercial underwriting teams.

The bank says professional reviews and required controls remain in place, with credit staff accountable for recommendations and final decisions. Its announcement does not name the underlying AI models, detail the safeguards applied to individual outputs or disclose a cost for the system. For now, the measurable claims TD provides are the draft-preparation time, the volume of test deals and the share of outputs that passed expert review.
