“Through SK hynix Ventures, we will support the growth of promising companies and grow into a global partner that jointly designs the future of AI infrastructure based on strategic investments and technological cooperation.”

Kwak Noh-Jung, CEO, SK hynix

SK hynix has launched a corporate venture capital brand in Silicon Valley as the memory-chip maker broadens its investment strategy beyond semiconductors. The company announced SK hynix Ventures on September 18, 2026, one day after holding its first Ventures Day with venture investors and startup executives in the United States.

The new arm will seek investments and partnerships across AI computing, data centers, system software and optical interconnects. SK hynix says the initiative is intended to help it secure emerging technologies while working more directly with startups and other investors building the infrastructure required by advanced AI systems.

SK hynix Moves From Technology Scouting to Joint Development

SK hynix has operated a corporate venture capital organization since 2015, making direct investments and committing capital to funds that back early-stage companies in semiconductors and other emerging technologies. Its investment activity has covered the United States, China, Israel and Japan.

According to the company, those investments have produced returns exceeding twice its cumulative investment to date. SK hynix also says its portfolio relationships have helped it identify new supply chains and customers through technical work including joint equipment development and proof-of-concept projects.

The company describes its earlier approach as “Tech Sensing” and “Path Finding”: tracking future technologies and identifying possible new businesses. SK hynix Ventures will expand that mandate toward collaborative development across a wider AI ecosystem, rather than focusing only on finding promising companies.

Four Investment Areas Define the New Venture Brand

SK hynix has named four areas for the expanded program: AI computing, data centers, system software and optical interconnect. The list reaches beyond the company’s traditional memory business and reflects the number of components required to build and operate large AI systems.

At the Silicon Valley event, participating startups discussed the interaction between computing, memory and system software as AI models become more demanding. The companies also examined optical-based systems, with attention to their performance and power efficiency in AI data centers.

SK hynix did not disclose a fund size, individual investment targets or the names of startups attending the event. Its announcement frames the venture arm as a platform for strategic investments and technical cooperation rather than a standalone financial fund.

Why Silicon Valley Is the First Base

The choice of Silicon Valley gives SK hynix direct access to venture firms and startups working on data-center hardware, software and networking technologies. The company’s chief executive, Kwak Noh-Jung, joined senior executives and representatives from global venture firms at the inaugural Ventures Day held on September 17 local time.

SK hynix is one of the major suppliers of DRAM and NAND flash memory, products that sit inside servers and storage systems used for AI workloads. Its new venture strategy gives the company a way to engage with technologies adjacent to memory while also building relationships with potential customers, partners and suppliers.

That approach matters because the company is not limiting its search to another generation of memory. It is targeting the systems around memory: processors, data-center equipment, software and optical links that move data through AI infrastructure.

Kwak Noh-Jung Puts Ecosystem Investment at the Center

Kwak said AI competitiveness depends on more than obtaining new technologies quickly. In his view, customers, partners and startups must create value together, with SK hynix using investment and technical collaboration to help shape future infrastructure.

The statement places SK hynix Ventures alongside the company’s existing semiconductor operations, not outside them. Its portfolio companies may become sources of technology, equipment partners, customers or collaborators in future product development.

SK hynix’s announcement provides no timetable for new investments and does not identify specific transactions tied to the launch. For now, the concrete move is the creation of the Silicon Valley venture brand and its stated focus on four parts of the AI infrastructure stack.
