SAP says a guided Joule Studio workflow can cut the time to turn an idea into a working AI agent from 13 hours to about 2.5. The company also says its tests found the process reduced cost per task by 50%, attributing the savings to agents needing fewer tokens. SAP announced the building tools and expanded governance features at its TechEd conference on October 27, 2026; the figures come from the company’s own account of its testing, not an independent benchmark.
Joule Studio opens more ways to build agents
SAP is extending Joule Studio, its agent-building environment, with no-code and pro-code tools for business users and developers. The platform supports more than 70 AI models, according to SAP, and lets eligible customers in its early-adopter program design and run n8n workflows within Joule Studio. SAP says broader availability for those workflows will follow.
A Process Consulting Agent is intended to help users decide what to build before development starts. SAP says its Knowledge Graph can identify relevant APIs, Model Context Protocol servers and data products, after which Joule Studio generates specifications, structure and integration logic. SAP CTO Philipp Herzig described the broader aim this way: “This year, we are showing how we are moving from AI learning your business to running it.”
The platform’s business-data context is another part of SAP’s pitch. The company says SAP Business Data Cloud and SAP Knowledge Graph can ground agents in trusted customer information, while customers retain ownership of their data. SAP says it does not share customer data with others to train or improve large language models.
Gateways extend controls beyond SAP systems
SAP is adding a governed agent gateway so third-party agents can invoke Joule agents with access controls in place. It also announced SAP Enterprise AI Gateway, a separate solution intended to centralize authentication, policy enforcement, routing, monitoring, usage tracking and auditing for AI traffic across an enterprise.
Joule Studio is also gaining observability and administrative controls that show developers and administrators agent behavior, model usage and spending. Together, the gateway and monitoring additions address a practical problem for companies connecting agents across multiple systems: managing permissions and activity without building a bespoke connection for each one.
EU AI Act assistant begins with early adopters
SAP’s AI Governance Assistant is designed to help customers classify AI systems and assess compliance with the EU AI Act. SAP’s TechEd coverage says the assistant will enter its Early Adopter Care program in November. It uses information already available, prompts an agent owner for missing details and produces an audit-ready AI risk classification.
SAP says deploying and running custom agents on the SAP-managed Joule Studio runtime will remain free through December 2026 for select customers under a time-limited promotion. The design tools for building and testing agents and n8n workflows remain free under fair-use limits. SAP’s announcement does not give a general price for the runtime after the promotion or a date for broader n8n availability.
