Relativity Connects Legal Workflows Directly to ChatGPT Enterprise

ChatGPT Becomes a Control Surface for Relativity aiR
Relativity announced on September 17, 2026, that its Relativity aiR platform now integrates with ChatGPT Enterprise through the Model Context Protocol, or MCP. The connection allows legal teams to use natural-language instructions in ChatGPT Enterprise to create new matters, arrange workspaces around their case data, manage access and run administrative workflows in Relativity aiR.
The announcement is about operational control rather than moving legal evidence into ChatGPT. Relativity says its platform remains the place where substantive data analysis takes place, while ChatGPT Enterprise provides a conversational interface for administrative actions. That division gives users a familiar way to issue commands without turning the general-purpose assistant into the system that stores or analyzes the underlying case material.
Administrative Work Moves Outside the Relativity Interface
Relativity describes the MCP connection as an execution layer over aiR. In practical terms, an administrator can use ChatGPT Enterprise to orchestrate work that would otherwise require multiple steps inside Relativity, including setting up matters, structuring workspaces and managing permissions.
The company’s earlier explanation of its MCP approach identifies the first group of supported tasks as client and matter management, workspace creation, group and permission management, access and governance reviews, usage reporting and operational summaries. Relativity separates those activities from substantive legal work such as uploading, processing, searching and reviewing evidence, which continues inside its own platform.
That boundary matters for legal teams because administrative convenience and evidence handling carry different requirements. Relativity says actions taken through its MCP connectors run under the authenticated user’s identity and are audited in the platform. The company also says sensitive data stays governed within Relativity while the external AI application handles the natural-language interaction.
Relativity Keeps Legal Analysis Inside aiR
Relativity positions aiR as the component responsible for analysis of case data. Its announcement says that connecting ChatGPT Enterprise to the platform does not move the company’s substantive data analysis outside Relativity aiR, where the system can apply its legal workflows and existing permissions.
The arrangement leaves ChatGPT Enterprise responsible for interpreting a user’s request and initiating an action, while Relativity handles the underlying matter environment. That makes the integration narrower than a general document-analysis connection: the announced capabilities focus on preparing and administering legal work rather than asking ChatGPT to review a document set or make a privilege determination.
Relativity’s MCP documentation describes the same division across its other connectors. External assistants can issue administrative requests, but Relativity says its own platform remains the system where legal data is analyzed, governed and acted on.
An Extension of Relativity’s OpenAI Relationship
The new connection follows an earlier Relativity integration with OpenAI. The company says ChatGPT Enterprise became a data source in Relativity Collect in 2024, allowing legal teams to collect activity logs and conversation content for review in a near-native format.
Relativity has also announced MCP connections involving Claude, Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise and Microsoft Copilot. Its Microsoft announcement in August described similar natural-language controls for administrative reporting and workspace management. The ChatGPT Enterprise integration adds OpenAI’s enterprise assistant to the set of interfaces that can reach Relativity’s legal-data platform.
The company directs customers to its MCP page for information about activating the OpenAI connector and says its team will discuss the integration at RelFest Chicago, scheduled for September 29 through October 1. The announcement does not describe a separate ChatGPT product for lawyers; it connects existing enterprise ChatGPT access to Relativity’s administrative workflows while keeping case analysis in aiR.
Why the Boundary Matters in Legal Operations
Relativity’s approach reflects a specific division of labor. ChatGPT Enterprise supplies the conversational front end, while Relativity retains control over matter structure, permissions, audit records and evidence-focused analysis. For firms and corporate legal departments, the value is not simply asking an assistant a question; it is issuing a command that can create or modify part of a governed case environment.
That makes the integration most relevant to litigation-support teams, legal operations groups and administrators who spend time provisioning workspaces and checking access before attorneys begin substantive review. Relativity’s announcement places that administrative work at the center of the product, while its aiR platform remains responsible for the legal analysis that follows.
