OpenAI has hired Patreon co-founder Sam Yam to lead a new Creator Product division, putting one of the creator economy’s early platform builders in charge of a team aimed at developing tools for artists and online communities.
The appointment comes as OpenAI’s models generate text, images, audio and video with increasing quality. Yam leaves Patreon after more than 13 years and joins OpenAI alongside Drew Rowny and Shannon Ma, identified by The Decoder as Patreon’s former heads of product and engineering.
Sam Yam Brings Patreon’s Platform Experience to OpenAI
Yam co-founded Patreon with musician Jack Conte in 2013. Patreon’s platform lets creators earn money from fan memberships and sell access to exclusive work, giving Yam direct experience with the business and product problems facing people who publish online.
Patreon currently identifies Yam as its co-founder and chief technology officer. The company describes its service as a platform built for creators and fans, making Yam’s move a significant transfer of experience from a creator-focused subscription business to an AI company building generative tools.
OpenAI has not disclosed the size of the new division, its reporting structure or the products it will release. The company also has not announced whether the group will focus on consumer applications, developer tools, creator monetization or a combination of those areas.
OpenAI’s Creator Pitch Meets Years of Distrust
Yam’s appointment addresses a difficult relationship between generative AI companies and creative professionals. Creators have challenged AI companies over the use of copyrighted work in training data, while many also worry that automated production could reduce demand for their labor.

Three Former Patreon Leaders Join the New Team
Yam is bringing Rowny and Ma with him from Patreon. The Decoder identifies Rowny as a former product leader and Ma as a former engineering leader, although the report does not specify their new OpenAI titles.
The three-person move gives OpenAI a founding team with experience spanning product development, engineering and creator services. Their work at Patreon also gives the new division familiarity with the practical systems around online publishing, including the relationship between creators, audiences and the platforms that connect them.
Patreon’s own leadership page lists Yam as co-founder and chief technology officer. The page also lists Rowny as vice president of product management and Ma as vice president of engineering, descriptions that establish their seniority at Patreon but do not define their roles at OpenAI.
A First Look Could Arrive at DevDay
The Decoder says OpenAI could offer a first look at the new group’s work during OpenAI DevDay on September 29, 2026. OpenAI’s event page confirms that DevDay will take place in San Francisco and include a keynote featuring CEO Sam Altman, technical sessions and product demonstrations.
No creator-focused announcement has been confirmed for the event. For now, the concrete change is the formation of a new OpenAI division led by Patreon’s co-founder, with two former Patreon executives joining him.
Yam’s first test will be turning that background into products that creators see as useful without asking them to set aside the concerns that have made AI such a contested tool in the first place.
