ChatGPT Moves Into Word’s Sidebar
OpenAI has made ChatGPT for Word available across every ChatGPT plan, including Free. The integration places ChatGPT inside Microsoft Word through a sidebar, allowing users to work with an open document without switching to a separate browser window.
OpenAI says the add-in can turn notes and source material into a memo, proposal, or report. It can also summarize a document, produce an executive summary, revise selected text for a different audience, reorganize headings and numbering, and flag unclear language or inconsistent terminology.
The company describes the release in its product documentation rather than through a named executive announcement. The change brings Word into the same Microsoft add-in used for ChatGPT in Excel and PowerPoint.
One Add-In for Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Users install ChatGPT from Microsoft Marketplace, open the add-in from Word’s ribbon, and sign in with a ChatGPT account. After opening a document, they can enter requests in the sidebar or select text and describe the edit they want.
OpenAI’s examples range from proofreading and executive summaries to investment memos, client recommendations, operating plans, and plain-language explanations of contract clauses. The product can also use information from supported connected services, including Outlook, SharePoint, Google Workspace, and Dropbox, depending on the user’s plan, workspace settings, and permissions.
Access still depends on organization-level controls. ChatGPT workspace administrators can turn the Word integration on or off, while Microsoft 365 administrators must allow the add-in for employees. OpenAI says ChatGPT for Word will be enabled by default starting October 1, 2026, although organizations can retain administrative control.
Free Access Does Not Mean Unlimited Use
Every plan can use the add-in, but each account remains subject to its plan’s limits. OpenAI says Word uses token-based pricing tied to the model being used, the size of the document, and the amount of work requested.
On plans that include Codex and other premium features, Word draws from a shared usage allowance. That means work performed in Word can reduce the remaining allowance available for those features. The documentation does not describe ChatGPT for Word as a separate unlimited allocation for Free or paid users.
OpenAI also warns that document work can consume tokens based on both the text supplied and the response generated. Users handling long reports or repeated revisions may therefore reach their plan limits faster than they would during a short editing session.
Separate Chats and Familiar AI Risks
ChatGPT for Word does not carry over the user’s main ChatGPT conversation history, memory, or skills. Chats created in the add-in remain separate from conversations in ChatGPT, and the assistant does not automatically access other files stored on the user’s computer.
Users must paste relevant material into a prompt or work from the document currently open in Word. Connected applications can provide additional context only when the account, workspace, and permissions allow it.
OpenAI cautions that the add-in can make mistakes, change text unintentionally, or require manual corrections to complex formatting, tables, and charts. The company advises users to check important facts, figures, citations, and edits before sharing a document, and to save a copy before making substantial changes.
Privacy Depends on the Account and Workspace
Data handling follows the user’s ChatGPT plan and data controls. In Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces, OpenAI says inputs and outputs are not used to train its models by default. Personal-plan users remain governed by the data settings associated with their ChatGPT account.
The broad rollout gives Free users access to the same basic Word entry point as paid subscribers, but it does not remove the limits, privacy settings, or administrative policies attached to those accounts. For organizations, the decisive step is not installation alone: both ChatGPT and Microsoft 365 administrators can determine whether employees see and use the add-in.
