Nasdaq Puts Governed AI Agents Inside Calypso Workflows

Nasdaq announced on September 29, 2026, that it is adding a governed AI agent environment to Calypso, its capital markets and treasury platform. The system is designed to let financial institutions run agents against trading, risk and collateral records, while connecting those agents to business workflows and institutional controls. Nasdaq says the launch’s first capability is a natural-language assistant for querying platform data and documentation.

Calypso becomes an agent orchestration layer

The environment is intended to give banks and other financial institutions a place to use agents within the platform they already rely on for front-to-back-office trading, risk management and collateral workflows. Nasdaq says firms can also connect their own AI infrastructure through an integration layer built on the Model Context Protocol, or MCP, a standard for linking agents to software.

“For institutions to adopt AI agents at scale, they need a trusted, governed infrastructure inside the capital market platforms they already run, a place to connect agents from many different sources to real workflows, data, and controls,” said Magnus Haglind, Nasdaq’s Head of Capital Markets Technology.

Nasdaq describes the environment as having operational boundaries, live oversight and sandboxing, with no external data retention. The company says those controls are designed to keep agents operating within each institution’s perimeter and policies. Agents can use Calypso’s system-of-record trading, risk and collateral data, with the option to add enterprise, market and reference data sources.

MCP links client infrastructure to Calypso

The design gives institutions a way to connect agents from different sources rather than limiting them to Nasdaq-built software. Nasdaq positions Calypso as the orchestration layer between those agents and the financial workflows, data and controls held in the platform. The announcement does not specify which third-party agents or models are supported.

Clients retain control of their data, Nasdaq says. The company will host its agents in the Calypso cloud environment, which runs on Amazon Bedrock; on-premises customers will also be able to connect to the same agents. Nasdaq plans to work with individual clients as they address their internal AI governance and control requirements before bringing the capabilities online.

The assistant arrives before specialized agents

The natural-language assistant is the first agentic capability available with the launch. Users can query Calypso data, documentation and other platform information, with Nasdaq describing the intended uses as data analysis and document review. The release does not provide pricing or a general availability schedule for the assistant.

Nasdaq says it plans to add a suite of governed agents to address manual work in capital markets operations. Its announcement gives no deployment dates or performance results for those planned workers, so the initial release centers on the assistant and the underlying controlled environment rather than a set of already-operating automated workflows.

Nasdaq cites post-trade friction as a use case

Nasdaq pointed to a recent survey with Acuiti in making the case for automation: almost half of respondents cited manual intervention as a challenge in post-trade operations, while 56% said they risk falling behind competitors if they do not integrate AI or machine learning into clearing. The announcement does not give the survey’s sample size or methodology.

The launch extends Nasdaq’s existing AI work across financial technology products. The company says Nasdaq Verafin’s agentic AI workforce is used by more than 800 clients, while its AxiomSL platform offers AI-powered regulatory reporting. In Calypso, the first capability announced is a natural-language assistant that answers queries about the platform’s data and documentation.
