Headline has closed a $400 million fund for early-stage European companies, giving the venture firm a new pool of capital for Seed and Series A investments with a focus on AI. Announced on October 1, Headline EU VIII is the firm’s eighth fund dedicated to European founders. The fund targets companies across Europe; the announcement describes AI as a focus, not an exclusive investment category.
Headline EU VIII targets early rounds
Headline manages more than $5 billion and invests from Seed through Growth, according to the company information reported by Tech.eu. Its teams operate across Berlin, Hamburg, Luxembourg, Paris, London, San Francisco, São Paulo, Taipei and Tokyo. The new fund puts fresh capital behind the firm’s European early-stage strategy, while its Global Growth Fund supports later financing.
The existing European portfolio spans AI developers and other technology companies. It includes Mistral, Black Forest Labs, Fundamental Technologies, Attio, Bioptimus, AMI Labs and Recursive Superintelligence, alongside companies such as Farfetch, Raisin and Staffbase.
Mistral shows how Headline follows a company
Headline first backed Mistral at Seed in 2023, weeks after the company was founded by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix. The firm has invested in each subsequent round, most recently in the Series D through its Global Growth Fund, Tech.eu reported. Mistral chief executive Arthur Mensch described the investor’s part in the company’s financing history this way:
“They believed in our ambition from day one, helped us think bigger at every stage, and consistently opened doors. They were at their best during the moments that mattered most: playing a key role in Mistral’s $415 million Series A – the largest Series A ever raised in Europe – and at the defining inflection points of our journey.”

The example illustrates Headline’s stated approach: invest early, then remain involved as companies raise larger rounds. Mistral is one company in the portfolio, rather than a template that every new fund investment must follow.
Cross-border support is part of the pitch
Headline says it has helped dozens of European companies expand into the United States, including Farfetch, NGINX and Semrush. The support it describes ranges from setting up a first US entity and hiring senior staff to customer introductions and preparation for a cross-border listing. Those services sit alongside the capital as the firm makes its case to founders building companies across national markets.
“The founders we meet today assume global scale from the first conversation and hire across borders from year one,” said Christian Miele, a partner at Headline. He added that the firm has partnered with European founders for more than twenty years and that EU VIII lets it continue that work.
A separate fund can back $100 million rounds
Headline partner Jon Userovici said the firm can lead a first round and, through its Global Growth Fund, participate in rounds of $100 million or more. That follow-on capacity is separate from EU VIII’s $400 million pool for Seed and Series A companies. Headline’s announcement leaves the new fund’s central remit clear: back European companies early, with AI among its priorities, and draw on the broader firm as some portfolio companies grow.
