Etsy Bars AI-Written Recipes and Craft Patterns
Etsy now prohibits sellers from using AI to generate recipes, craft patterns and other functional instructions. The marketplace still permits disclosed, seller-prompted AI art, while requiring listings for instructions to show a real result

“AI should support our sellers’ creativity and craftsmanship, not replace them.”
James Ossman, vice president of Customer Operations at Etsy
Etsy is barring AI-generated recipes, craft patterns and other step-by-step instructions under a policy update published October 22. Sellers may still use AI to create some products, including artwork, but instructions that buyers rely on to make, prepare, build or repair something must be the seller’s own work.
The change also requires listings for functional guides to show a real result made using the instructions—not an AI-generated or simulated image. Etsy says the rules address the risk that a buyer may discover errors only after spending time and materials following a faulty pattern or recipe.
Etsy draws a line at instructions
The company defines functional instructions by what they help a buyer do: make, prepare, build, repair, use or complete a specific task. Its examples include knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, quilting and beading patterns, as well as recipes, woodworking plans, assembly manuals and instructional ebooks.
That distinction separates directions from creative work that uses AI as a tool. Etsy says sellers can continue to create AI-generated art from their own prompts or inputs, provided they disclose AI use in the listing and play a clear creative role. The new restriction targets AI-generated instructions themselves, not every product or image that involves AI.
A finished result must back up the guide
For pattern, recipe and instruction listings, Etsy says sellers must show an actual result produced by following the guide. A simulated image or AI-generated depiction does not meet that requirement. The company’s seller guidance also says existing listings that fail its updated image requirements need to be updated.
The rules extend beyond instructional downloads. Listings must include at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background, subject to exceptions for certain item types, and all images must accurately represent what buyers will receive. Etsy says sellers could be responsible for refunding a buyer if an item materially differs from its listing and the buyer opens a case.
AI art remains allowed, with disclosure
Etsy is not imposing a blanket ban on AI tools. Sellers can use their original prompts with AI generators to create items such as fantasy scenes or custom pet portraits, but they must disclose AI use. The company also prohibits bot-generated listings made without individual human involvement, and says violations may lead to listing removal or, for severe or repeated breaches, permanent shop closure.
AI-generated prompt bundles remain prohibited, too. Etsy says prompts should accompany the finished artwork rather than be sold separately. Its policy also bars using AI imagery to make a product look materially better or different from what the buyer will receive, and prohibits AI-created fake inventory.
Etsy casts the rules as a trust measure
In a separate October 22 post, Ossman said nearly six million creative entrepreneurs sell on Etsy and nearly 90% run their shops on their own. Etsy says many active buyers struggle to tell which items involve AI-generated content, making that uncertainty a top-three barrier to shopping more often on the platform.
The company plans to add guidance when sellers upload images, invest in tools to identify misleading imagery and fraudulent listings, and let members report listings they believe misuse AI imagery. Etsy says those reports will initially help it understand buyer concerns and will not trigger immediate enforcement. The company says it will test enforcement and expand removals in the coming months; for now, reports are a feedback channel, not an instant takedown mechanism.
