More than eight days: that is the average time invoice processing takes, according to a 2025 report cited by Fortune. Causa Prima is betting $20 million that AI agents can shorten the wait by handling payment disputes between businesses. The Delaware-based startup announced the seed round on October 13; it closed in September.

Causa Prima targets the handoff between finance teams

Accounts payable teams manage what a company owes, while accounts receivable teams track what customers owe it. Disagreements over invoices can leave employees on both sides trading messages and waiting for approvals. Causa Prima’s platform is designed to put AI agents on each side of that exchange to work through disputes and negotiate payment terms.

“The status quo today is that a lot of things are still somewhat manual,” Maex Ament, Causa Prima cofounder, told Fortune. He described the company’s focus as connecting “accounts payable of one company and accounts receivable of another.” Causa Prima says it earns a cut when its agents successfully negotiate early payments between buyers and suppliers.

Base10 leads the $20 million round

Base10 Partners led the seed financing, with QED Investors and FJ Labs joining as new investors. Existing backers Creandum, Kfund and Borusan Ventures also participated. Causa Prima did not disclose its valuation.

The raise brings the company’s total funding to $30 million, following a $10 million pre-seed round. Causa Prima has 25 employees across offices in Madrid and Munich. It plans to use the new capital to expand into the United States and open an office in New York.

Early payments are part of the business model

The company’s approach is aimed at a costly gap between corporate finance systems: software may organize a single company’s records, but disputes and payment delays involve two organizations. Base10 general partner Rexhi Dollaku framed that distinction in a written statement to Fortune: “Causa Prima is building for the handoff between companies.”

Negotiating earlier payment can offer a supplier faster access to cash and give a buyer the chance to secure a discount. Causa Prima’s cut from successful early-payment negotiations ties its revenue to those outcomes, rather than only to software access. The value of that model depends on buyers and suppliers on both sides adopting the service and letting agents take part in financial exchanges.

New York expansion puts the model to a test

The company’s founders bring experience in finance and business software. Ament previously founded supply-chain finance company Taulia and decentralized finance company Centrifuge; cofounder Henrik Gebbing helped found fintech company Finoa. They brought Philip Stanislaus, who had led engineering under Ament at Centrifuge, into Causa Prima as chief technology officer.

For the startup, the next test is whether its network can move beyond a finance-team tool into a reliable channel between separate companies. Can agents resolve disagreements quickly enough to change payment times, and will businesses trust them to negotiate on their behalf? The announced plan is concrete: Causa Prima will use the seed funding to open a New York office as it expands in the United States.
